NEC, mired in an auditing mess, has suffered from shrinking demand for its microprocessors, but it is aiming to cut costs and develop new revenue from sales of network systems to carriers and financial institutions.

Last year, NEC unnerved investors by restating its earnings three times. It had to correct past earnings after it discovered an employee had inflated sales figures, and then switched from U.S. to Japanese accounting rules in November. It later had to correct its figures due to human error.
NEC then missed a twice-extended April 2 deadline to file an earnings restatement for the business year to March 2006 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, to keep its listing of American depositary receipts on the Nasdaq exchange.
The company is still re-calculating its earnings for that year and is awaiting a decision from Nasdaq.
